Low Back Pain
Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. Most North Americans will experience low back pain at some time in their lives. Back pain is costly to the health care system and is a common reason for time away from work.

Back Disorders
The spine is made up of bone segments called vertebrae. Vertebrae have two parts: 1) the cylinder-shaped vertebral bodies to the front; and 2) the boney bridges making up the facet joints at the back. Most of the spine is flexible enough to let people bend, stretch, and lift. Between the bones of the spine are small discs that are hard on the outside and soft and jelly-like on the inside. The spinal bones are connected by the facet joints at the back and by the discs at the front.

Herniated Disc
The spine is made up of cylindrical bones called vertebrae. Between the bones of the spine are small discs made of a thick layer of cartilage on the outside and a soft and jelly-like material on the inside. The discs absorb shocks caused when the spine moves, and they allow the spine to bend.

Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints of the spine. The most common areas affected are the sacroiliac joints, which are the joints at the base of the spine that connect the spine and the pelvis, as well as the joints between the vertebrae. Other joints, such as the hips and shoulders, may also be similarly affected. AS causes pain, stiffness, and inflammation at the affected joints.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease that causes the cartilage to break down and the bone to overgrow or form cysts. Cartilage is a smooth, shiny material that lines the joints - allowing them to glide easily as you move. It is a type of resilient connective tissue that covers and protects the ends of bones in joints. Although OA can affect any joint in the body, it most frequently affects the hips, knees, hands, feet, and spine.

Scoliosis
Scoliosis refers to an abnormal curvature of the spine. The spine bends to one side or the other, causing compression of one side of the body. The ribs on one side will be closer together while the ribs of the other side will be farther apart. Scoliosis also involves a rotation of the spine, in which the individual vertebrae bones twist around the long axis of the spine.

Sports Injuries
Each year, about 1 in every 25 people will seek medical help for a sports injury, but not all of those injuries are sustained while playing sports. Any repetitive physical activity, even walking, can injure muscles and joints.
